Honeywell adds 80 jobs at Clover plant

Honeywell International Inc. will spend $10.5 million to expand a safety-glove plant in Clover and add 80 jobs at the facility.

The North Safety plant now employs 110. As an incentive to promote the expansion, York County has agreed to let the plant owners pay a fee in lieu of the normal, higher property taxes. The value of that inducement wasn’t immediately disclosed.

North Safety Products previously owned the plant. News that Honeywell will expand the operation is “music to our ears in Clover,” says Mayor Donnie Grice.

The expansion will come in stages. The first phase, to occur through next year, will add 30 jobs, with the company investing $4.5 million. The rest of the job growth and investment are to be completed by 2013.

As a part of the process, an additional product line will be added and 17,500 square feet will be added to the 61,000-square-foot structure.

The plant makes protective and safety gloves for firefighters, utility workers and the nuclear power industry.

Honeywell gained ownership of the plant in May 2008 when it bought Norcross Safety Products of Oak Brook, Ill., corporate parent of North Safety.

Nissan to create 350 jobs at Wearside factory in UK

Nissan has announced that its Wearside factory will start producing batteries for electric cars, which is expected to create 350 new jobs.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown said that Nissan's £200m investment "was great news for the local economy".

The plant, near Sunderland, has beaten off competition from other Nissan factories in Europe for the investment.

The move could pave the way for the production of electric vehicles at the North East plant in the near future.

"Sunderland could now be a strong contender to produce electric vehicles for Nissan in Europe, and we will continue to work with Nissan to ensure this happens," the prime minister said.

Mr Brown visited the Sunderland factory along with Business Secretary Lord Mandelson.

The BBC's Fiona Trott said that it was not clear whether the deal secured the jobs of the 4,000 people employed at the existing Nissan plant. She said 1,200 jobs had been cut earlier this year.

'Low carbon area'

Mr Mandelson said a "low-carbon economic area" would be established in the North East.

As part of the project, 750 charging points would be installed across the region and a training centre specialising in the manufacture and maintenance of low-carbon vehicles would be set up.

Nissan's £200m investment will be spread over five years and the new plant, which will make lithium-ion batteries, will also create and secure additional jobs in the related supply chain.

Nissan also announced it was setting up another battery manufacturing plant in Portugal.

Michael Steventon, head of automotive research at consultants KPMG, said that the announcement was a vote of confidence in the Nissan workforce in Sunderland.

"Batteries are only part of a vehicle but they are an expensive, logistically significant part," he said.

"It does mean that Nissan is more likely to manufacture electric vehicles in the UK than elsewhere in Europe," he added.

However, he said that if the UK wanted to really capitalise on the move toward hybrid vehicles, more investment in research and development was needed.

Assistance

The government said it was working with Nissan on supporting the investment by offering grants and loan guarantees, including support through its Automotive Assistance Programme.

Earlier this year, the government set aside £2.3bn to support the UK's ailing car industry - but nothing has yet been paid out.

"The North East has distinguished itself as the first specialised region for ultra-low-carbon vehicles," Lord Mandelson said.

"This is good news not just for the North East, but for the whole of the UK, helping to attract foreign investment and securing UK's place as a global leader in hi-tech manufacturing and automotive industries," he added.

TUC general secretary Brendan Barber said: "This is an excellent initiative. It combines active industrial policy and environmental transformation, pointing the way to the kind of economy we will need to build after the recession."

The announcement from Nissan comes only days after its Japanese rival Toyota said it would start manufacturing the new Auris hybrid petrol-electric vehicle at its plant in Burnaston, Derbyshire from mid-2010.

STMicroelectronics to create 650 jobs by 2012 at Crolles R&D facility

STMicroelectronics will create 650 jobs and invest $1.25bn in the Crolles R&D and wafer fab facility by 2012, according to ST's CEO, Carlo Bozotti, who added that the investment would give ST 'strategic independence'.

Bozotti was speaking at a ceremony to mark the formal launch of Nano2012 a joint R&D programme with CEA-LETI, the French Laboratory for Electronics & Information The French Minister of Economy, Industry and Employment, Christine Lagarde, said the investment was: "Strategically important since we will be keep a French production site in a sector which is absolutely crucial for us."

Nano2012 is a public/private strategic R&D program, led by ST, which gathers research institutes and industrial partners and is supported by French national, regional and local authorities.

The Nano2012 cooperation programme, with other programmes such as CATRENE, aims to provide will Europe's electronics industry with competitive access to the most advanced CMOS technologies from 32nm down to 22nm.

Work on the Nano2012 programme started on January 1, 2008. The five-year program, which will run until December 31, 2012, is partly funded to the extent of Euros 457m by the

In July 2007, ST joined the semiconductor Joint Development Alliance centred at IBM's Semiconductor Research and Development centre in East Fishkill and Albany, New York, which develops core and low-power CMOS processes from 32 to 22nm, and IBM joined ST in Crolles to develop value-added application-specific derivative CMOS technologies.

CEA-LETI and IBM, which have complementary expertise in the development of materials and processes required for CMOS technology, are collaborating on advanced process R&D down to 22nm and beyond, at CEA-LETI's Grenoble site (France), IBM's East Fishkill facility (NY), ST's Crolles site (France), and at the Albany NanoTech research centre (NY).

Since the start of the Nano2012 program in January 2008, ST and IBM have exchanged researchers between their sites at Crolles and East Fishkill and have begun working along with researchers from CEA-LETI on a variety of key programs, including 32nm and 28nm core CMOS processes, 45nm RF (Radio Frequency) derivative technology for wireless applications and 65nm non-volatile-memory derivative technology for use in automotive and smart-card applications.

Nano2012 focuses on technology platform development for low-power and application-specific derivative CMOS technologies. A technology platform encompasses the manufacturing process by which billions of transistors are integrated onto a single silicon chip as well as the components libraries and the design methodology to efficiently design leading-edge circuits in this process.

Energy firm Bord na Mona to create 300 jobs

Semi-state energy firm Bord na Mona has vowed to create 300 green jobs.

Announcing profits of more than 23 million euro, the company said it was aiming to halve the amount of CO2 it pumps out and turn its attention to the renewable market. Bord na Mona said 300 staff will be taken on as the company pushes ahead with new business ideas over the next five years.

Energy Minister Eamon Ryan welcomed the initiative and said it was a sign of the green economy in action. "This direction shows us that by going green, we not only benefit the environment but we reap considerable economic benefits as well," the minister said.

New Three Bridges train depot could create up to 300 jobs

Around 300 new jobs will be coming to the town as part of a £5.5 billion project.

A new train depot will soon be built in Three Bridges in time for the 2012 London Olympics.

Improved transport is being introduced by Network Rail, which will include more trains, more seats and better journeys for passengers.

The national train operator has had to choose two sites to hold its trains, one south and one north of Central London.

And the company has decided to build its south depot in Three Bridges.

338 new jobs at Continental Teves

Gov. Bev Perdue today announced the creation of up to 338 new jobs at Continental Teves, which makes brakes and brake parts for the automotive industry.

Henderson County earlier this month agreed to offer an incentive package to an unnamed company that planned to invest $30 million for machines and equipment, creating 338 new jobs by 2014. The company's name was not revealed until today.

"North Carolina ranks 10th nationally in automotive-related jobs thanks to the commitment of such international leaders as Continental and its subsidiary in our state,” Perdue said in a released statement. “Established companies continue to grow here because they know the value of our top business climate and skilled workforce.”

Henderson County was one of three locations that competed for the brake-maker's expansion, Henderson County Partnership for Economic Development President and CEO Andrew Tate told commissioners.

"This project is significant, because it is the largest manufacturing job creation project in Western North Carolina in over a decade, and one of the largest in Henderson County ever,” Henderson County Board of Commissioners Chairman Bill Moyer said.

The company plans to begin the work this year, commissioners were told, and would hire new employees in 2011. The average wage for the new positions would be $36,179.

The Fletcher Town Council approved an economic incentive package for the company Friday. Tate said the value was about half of what the board of commissioners approved.

The exact value of the incentives are hard to calculate, because they are based on a depreciating asset. The value of the incentives will decrease over time as the value of the equipment declines, but the overall value will be tens of thousands of dollars.

“Since it is equipment, it would be reassessed each year,” Tate explained.

Yale Industrial Products creates 65 jobs in Wadesboro

Yale Industrial Products Inc., a designer and manufacturer of material-handling products, will expand its operations in Wadesboro.

The company plans to invest $3 million and add 65 jobs over the next three years.

The Wadesboro plant has 136 workers.

The new jobs will pay an average $37,031 per year, excluding benefits. That exceeds the Anson County average of $28,288.

Yale Industrial Products is owned by Columbus McKinnon Corp. of New York, which makes hoists, trolleys, cranes and other material-handling equipment.

Columbus McKinnon also has hoist-manufacturing facilities in Michigan, Ohio and Virginia.

The company plans to consolidate its Michigan operation into the other plants, including the Wadesboro facility, which will add a line of wire rope hoists.

Columbus McKinnon also owns Duff-Norton, a manufacturing facility in Charlotte.

The proposed expansion was made possible, in part, by a $116,300 grant from the One North Carolina Fund, according to the office of Gov. Bev Perdue. The state uses the fund to attract business projects that create jobs.

New employment positions will be posted at the N.C. Employment Security Commission/JobLink Center at 116 W. Wade St. in Wadesboro. Applicants must apply at the center.

44% Indian employers predict new job additions in 2009

Companies have turned optimistic about their hiring plans in the year ahead, with as many as 44 per cent employers anticipating new job additions in 2009, a survey by job portal Naukri.com says.

The survey of over 900 recruiters across the country revealed a positive outlook for this year with 44 per cent respondents predicting addition of new jobs as against just 38 per cent in the December survey.

Moreover, as many as 37.5 per cent recruiting companies expect replacement hiring, while just 13.4 per cent anticipate a freeze in the activity, the survey said.

Further, a marginal 4.6 per cent respondents expect layoffs, it added.

"We perceive a positive sentiment among recruiters. Most companies are now doing replacement hiring. There has been an improvement in the hiring activity of industries including telecom, auto, banking, capital goods etc," Info Edge (India) National Head (Marketing and Communications) Sumeet Singh said.

The survey revealed a positive hiring scenario in industries like pharma and medical, construction and engineering and telecom, where over 50 per cent of the recruiters indicated that there would be creation of new jobs during the year.

Meanwhile, in the IT industry, 15 per cent of the recruiters indicated that there would be no hiring during the year. But the scenario seemed worse for IT enabled services where over eight per cent recruiters indicated layoffs, the report added.

Tesco to add 170 new jobs

Supermarket giant Tesco is in advanced negotiations to expand its Hunstanton store, with the creation of up to 170 new jobs – in yet another recession busting move.

Tesco is already working on plans to create hundreds of jobs in Lynn by building a Tesco Extra and raft of new shops on the old Campbells site, is pushing for a new store in Heacham and plans to expand its Gaywood store.

West Norfolk Council hopes to sell Tesco 1.7 acres of a 2.7 acre plot off Waveney Road, known locally as the sheep field, with a hope it will help it kick start plans to build affordable homes on the rest of the site.

The news prompted Hunstanton and District Chamber of Trade to call for independent traders and town's people to take action to prevent the town centre from dying.

Chairman Paul Beal said: "Tesco's aim is to kill all town centres. It's beneficial to the people, but not to the traders and people have to know that if they don't support their local traders their town centres will be full of charity shops and estate agents."

A Tesco spokesman said: "Tesco Hunstanton is a popular store but many people still go out of the town to do their shopping. By improving it we believe we will encourage more people back and it will create opportunities for other businesses."

The new store will still be primarily focused on food sales and is expected to be of a similar size to the store off Hardwick Road, Lynn, but the firm plans to consult with the community before firming up plans.

West Norfolk cabinet member for regeneration Cllr Jason Law said: "The proposed expansion to the Tesco store will bring additional all-year-round job opportunities, something the town needs following job losses from the closure of Woolworths.

"It is also hoped that some of the cash from the sale of the land can be ploughed back into the town – a welcome financial boost which will help the council deliver its ambitious Hunstanton Regeneration Master Plan."

Further negotiations with a social landlord will follow to push forward the development of homes on the rest of the site, but it is expected Tesco would make a contribution to them.

Hunstanton Mayor Christine Earnshaw said: "We are desperate for social housing in Hunstanton."

Liberal Democrats yesterday vowed to make the Conservative-led West Norfolk Council justify the move to sell part of the land to Tesco, saying it was needed for affordable homes.

SAP to create 30 new jobs at Kuala Lumpur call center

Business software giant SAP AG’s upcoming regional call centre will create 30 new jobs Kuala Lumpur.

The telemarketing staff would be tasked to make cold calls to 18,000 potential clients around the region and create demand for SAP’s products and services, SAP Malaysia Sdn Bhd managing director V.R Srivatsan said.

While these call centre staff won’t be handling actual product sales, they would help generate what the industry termed as “leads” to potential business worth an estimated 200mil euros (RM1bil) for SAP.

It was reported earlier this week that SAP Asia Pacific Japan had inked a deal to outsource its demand generation and telemarketing services in nine countries to Datacom SEA (M) Sdn Bhd.

The call centre will be based at Menara Olympia in Kuala Lumpur.

Srivatsan was speaking to reporters at the SAP World Tour 2009 event in Kuala Lumpur, one of 27 stops in the Asia Pacific region and part of a showcase SAP’s solutions to business partners and potential clients.

More than 300 participants turned up for the by-invitation business and technology event.

Key SAP customers such as Proton Holdings Bhd, Telekom Malaysia Bhd and Sime Darby Bhd were involved in panel discussions and shared their experience.

SAP Malaysia has more than 700 clients, of which 65% are small and medium enterprises. It has been in operation in the country since 1992.

The tapering of income tax funds has been a source of stress for city officials, but a light glimmers at the end of their financial tunnel.

A mail-order pharmaceutical company, Immediate Pharmaceutical Services Inc., located near the intersection Moore and Walker roads, intends to expand within Avon Lake -- or to Alabama -- potentially bringing 200 stable, $21 per hour jobs to the city.

"It's all conditional on approval by the state and also the company themselves," Mayor K.C. Zuber said. "It's a potential to bring in over $100,000 in income tax money a year for us."

In order to convince IPS to stay in town, the Ohio Department of Development proposed implementing the Ohio Job Creation Tax Credit Program.

The program would mandate that the city take 20 percent of the income tax generated by the new jobs and return them to IPS for the first five years after the expansion. This incentive would be capped at $100,000.

"It's a different angle attempting to attract and maintain business in the city," City Council President Gregory Zika said.

City Council approved legislation Monday that would allow Zuber to further negotiate with IPS.

Zilka said members of the city's Economic Development Advisory Board have reviewed and unofficially OK'd the plan, though a quorum was not reached.

"They were very pleased," Zilka said.

According to Zuber, the Ohio Department of Development is putting together its own package to encourage IPS to stay that could include a large sum of money as well as job training programs.

After weeks of working with the state and the IPS attorneys, Zuber said a decision will be made by the end of the month.

"The state will have taken their action and the company will have accepted or rejected their package," he said. "We're just going to do our part now so that when the state does that, they'll already know we're willing to work with them."

City officials are excited about the deal as it could not only bring in an extra $8.9 million in annual payroll to the city, but will also increase traffic to its existing businesses.

"It would not only be a huge boost for Avon Lake but also the west side of town," Ward 4 Councilman David Kos said.

Retailer Griffin Group creates 130 jobs

The Griffin Group have announced the creation of 130 retail jobs at three new stores.

The group opened its 19th new store at the Belarmine Plaza in Stepaside, Co Dublin, where 50 people will be employed.

On Wednesday, another 35 jobs came on line at a new store in Newcastle in Galway and a further 45 positions will be filled when another store opens its doors in Adamstown, Co Dublin, in September.

The company says the outlets are part of a new 'concept' called 'The Market', which will deal primarily in food but will also have off-licences and sell bus tickets and phone credit.

Network Rail creates new jobs in Rochdale(UK)

A new contact centre in Rochdale has been awarded a three-year contract from Network Rail to provide a national technical helpdesk service.

The centre is based on Drake St, as part of the Impact Partnership. The service involves taking calls and providing technical solutions 24 hrs a day 365 days of the year. The scale of the contract is vast encompassing support for 2,800 railway stations and over 200,000 other Network Rail buildings and assets.

The contract began in June 2008 with 20 local people recruited to carry out the work. The Mayor presented on behalf of Network Rail flowers to the employee who took the very first call, Joan Eccles.

The helpdesk advisor, from Heywood said: “It was great to be part of a brand new team and offering a new service, but when I first took the call I have to admit I was nervous.

"One year on I feel confident in my role and look forward to the calls which range from a problem with a lift to a one off incident such as an oil spill.”

From the numerous challenges experienced with any new service the team have matured and are now delivering a service that is meeting the client’s service level targets.

Mike Crompton, Property Operations Director, comments: “The excellent work that the team are providing to Network Rail has provided a platform of confidence to market the helpdesk to other organisations and we are confident that we will expand this aspect of the business and create more local jobs.”

Impact was established almost three years ago to tackle the economic challenges facing the Borough. Impact is committed to creating at least 1,305 sustainable jobs during the 15-year course of the Partnership – an ambitious job creation target which is especially challenging given Rochdale’s ranking as one of the most deprived Boroughs in the country.

During the past three years, Impact has played a leading role in transforming Council services to the public, most notably with the creation of a new extended-hours customer contact centre which currently handles an average of 36,000 calls per month.

The Partnership also plays a pivotal role in supporting the physical regeneration, providing building and highways professionals for local projects across the Borough – such as the recently improved junctions at Sudden, Townhead and Kingsway.

Spear Group Holdings adds 30 jobs at Mason

Spear Group Holdings will expand its Mason production facility and add 30 jobs, the label manufacturer said.

The realignment of its production footprint transfers capacity from its Milford, N.H., plant, according to a news release.

A maker of pressure-sensitive labeling for the food, beverage and personal care industries, Spear operates facilities in Clarksville, Tenn., Milford, N.H., and Fulton, N.Y., as well as its headquarters facility in Mason. Some its clients include Neutrogena, Lipton Tea and Starbucks.

The company did not disclose details about the improvements. A spokesman said because the company builds its own proprietary printing equipment, it would not share specifics.

Spear has seen several years of growth, with its global output more than doubling, president Randy Spears said in the release. It has added capacity in Europe and South Africa.

Work at its Mason facility will begin in August and will update narrow-web capabilities, including new printing presses and production flows. Work should be completed by year 2009.

Vocus Inc to hire 60 employees by 2009

Vocus Inc., which provides software for public relations management, is hiring 60 new employees by the end of 2009.

The Lanham-based company said the majority of the hires will be local at its headquarters and media research facility in College Park.

Most of the open positions are in sales and marketing but also exist in almost every department, including product development and client services.

The company is getting the hiring word out through a mix of traditional and nontraditional means, like job boards, social media, Twitter and networking events in the area, said Cal Shilling, the company’s chief recruiter.

Those hires will be in addition to the 100 employees the company has hired so far in 2009, which includes those in its European offices.

Vocus increased revenue to $20.41 million during the first quarter of the year, up 14 percent compared to the first quarter of 2008.

Immediate Pharmaceutical Services to create 200 jobs in three years

State and local officials hope to encourage an Avon Lake mail-order pharmacy to go ahead with a $5 million expansion that would add 200 jobs over three years.

Government agencies are preparing to offer tax and other incentives worth "something less than $2 million" to Immediate Pharmaceutical Services, said Michael Stanek, an Avon Lake at-large councilman.

The package would include $98,000 in income-tax rebates from the Lorain County city to secure the expansion, said K.C. Zuber, the city's mayor, who said he did not know exactly how much the state might contribute.

Zuber received word from Ohio officials in early June that IPS, as the company is known, could increase its presence in the city if the company received an expected contract to handle prescription services for some state employees. But at least one other community was competing for the proposed larger operations.

"A city in Alabama also bid on getting IPS to move there," Stanek said. As often happens when companies announce possible expansion plans, state and local governments began battling over which locale could provide the most incentives.

IPS formerly was a unit of Medina-based Discount Drug Mart, which sold the pharmacy-benefit manager in September. The buyer, PBM HealthExtras, paid $40 million.

Not long after the purchase, HealthExtras chief executive, David Blair, said the Maryland-based company intended to expand the IPS mail-order fulfillment center in Ohio. HealthExtras also operates a retail pharmacy network of more than 60,000 participating drugstores around the country.

Any expansion "would be great for Avon Lake and for Lorain County," Stanek said. Zuber said Stanek and other council members would vote Monday, just before the legislative body's five-week summer break, to authorize that the mayor continue negotiating with IPS. "I'm here to help them with anything they want," he said.

A spokeswoman for the Ohio Department of Development said the state has offered an incentive package but would provide no further details about a deal still under discussion. Other sources said the department is scheduled to meet in late July to consider the exact scope of any incentives.

The results Zuber hopes for include these potential benefits for his city:

Jobs would increase from the current 90 to nearly 300 over 36 months.

Average wages at the fulfillment center would be about $21.50 an hour.

The income tax revenue from the additional jobs would, in time, add $134,000 a year to the city's budget.

For the first five years of IPS' expansion, though, the company would benefit from a 20 percent reduction in income taxes, reducing Avon Lake's take by $98,000 over the period.

Almac creates 80 new jobs in UK

Recruitment will begin shortly for the first of around 80 jobs which will be created in a £9 million expansion by pharmaceutical giant Almac.

Phase one of the expansion was completed this week, adding 30,000 sq ft to the company’s headquarters at Seagoe Industrial Estate.

The three-storey extension to the Almac Pharma Services division has increased the size of the laboratory and office areas. The new, state–of-the-art laboratories will enhance the division’s existing analytical and microbiological services.

Phase 2 of the investment is ongoing and will see the expansion and update of the administration areas. It will be completed later in the summer.

The expansion has been supported by Invest NI, and is part of the continued growth of the Almac Group that has seen recent completion of a specialist storage facility in Craigavon, and the ongoing development of the group’s US headquarters in Pennsylvania.

Graeme McBurney, president and managing director of Almac Pharma Services, said, “Increased client demand for our integrated services, from product development to commercial supply, has resulted in this investment and expansion. Less than two weeks after the grand opening of a call center in Saraland, Ryla Inc. officials announced plans Thursday to hold job fairs aimed at hiring 600 new employees.

Karen Clay, vice president of marketing, said the company, which provides technical support-call services for clients, will conduct the job fairs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday beginning next week and continuing through July 30.

A good impression made by the facility on one of its clients led to the quick decision to expand the workforce since the center's June 30 opening, Clay said.

"One of our clients were so impressed at the ribbon cutting in Saraland that they decided to expedite their timeline to add more agents," she said.

The 90,000-square-foot building formerly housed a call center for the Hertz Corp.

Hertz left the building as employees shifted to working from home.

As of Thursday, Ryla had 550 workers at the Saraland facility. In all, the company, based in Kennesaw, Ga., has about 2,500 employees.

Adding 600 more workers would put Ryla closer to its goal of supplying 1,200 jobs in Saraland before 2011, which would earn it $1.1 million in cash incentives. The company is 50 employees away from earning half of the full amount of incentives, which would be once the workforce reached 600.

The Mobile County Commission and the state government are supplying the incentives.

Clay said she's certain the job fairs will help find more than enough employees.

"Now that the word is out about who we are, more people should attend," Clay said. "Many people assumed we do telemarketing. We don't. We do tech support for Fortune 500 companies and government clients."

Ryla is also giving $100 to employees for each new hire they refer.

Clay said before being interviewed for the job, candidates will be asked to take basic typing and grammar tests.

"We are looking for individuals who have customer contact values and hospitality skills," Clay said.

She advised that anyone coming for the job fairs be dressed professionally and bring a résumé and two forms of government-issued identification.

Bravo Health adding more than 200 jobs in East Baltimore

Bravo Health Inc. said it will expand its office in East Baltimore and bring more than 200 additional jobs to the city.

The company, which provides Medicare Advantage health plans, is expanding its office by 30,000 square feet, to a total of 117,000 square feet. Its current Brewers Hill space employs 570.

Baltimore City Mayor Sheila Dixon said in a news release that retaining the company is a coup for the city.

The Baltimore Development Corporation, the city’s economic development agency, said it worked for several months with Bravo Health and broker Obrecht Commercial Real Estate to keep the company in the city.

Bravo derives 80 percent of its $1 billion business from Medicare Advantage, which supplements federal Medicare coverage for senior citizens with additional services, including coverage for preventative visits, eye glasses and health care services.

Lightning Hybrids to create 50 jobs in Loveland

The Loveland City Council unanimously approved a $100,000 incentive deal for startup car company Lightning Hybrids to create 50 jobs in Loveland.

Lightning Hybrids will collect its first $50,000 from the city when it signs the agreement, possibly by Aug. 1.

It then has 24 months to have 25 new employees working for at least one year and paid no less than $65,000 annually, said Betsey Hale, Loveland's business development manager.

If the company meets the timeline outlined in the deal, it will get the second $50,000 to again hire 25 employees over 24 months with the same provisions.

If it doesn't hit the timeframes, the city can charge the company $2,000 for each job it did not create in the agreed period of time, Hale said.

Lightning Hybrids was launched in downtown Loveland last year by local entrepreneurs to build a hydraulic-biodiesel car that can get 100 miles per gallon. Since then, the company also developed a retrofit hydraulic system to install in a variety of trucks and cars that is ready to go to market.

The first Lightning Hybrids prototype sports car was parked outside of council chambers for officials to see.

Lightning Hybrids co-founder Tim Reeser told the City Council on Tuesday the company is already shopping for manufacturing space in downtown Loveland and hopes to have 477 new jobs in the city during the next five years.

New Morrisons store creates 100 jobs in UK

DOWNHAM'S brand new Morrisons store was officially opened on Monday, bringing to the town more than 100 new jobs.

The store, which represents a "substantial investment" for the well-known chain, was officially opened at 9am by store general manager Marcus Hamill and long-serving colleague Kerry Blackwell.

The Bridge Street store has been developed at the site after a former outlet for Somerfield there closed.

Morrisons confirmed in March it had bought the supermarket premises from the Co-operative Group, which had completed its acquisition of the Somerfield chain.

The Co-op was required to sell off a number of its newly-acquired Somerfield stores due to competition fears. The Downham store then closed in April ready for its extensive refit, Morrisons laying on a free bus for customers to the Lynn store in the meantime.

Mr Hamill said: "We've had an amazing response from customers, and they have been a pleasure to serve. I would like to thank them and my colleagues for making today such a success."

Over the past weeks, the team had been working night and day, he said. Opening the doors and welcoming shoppers was reward for all the training and preparation. Some 66 staff working at the former Somerfield store have joined Morrisons, who have also recruited 111 managerial, full-time and part-time posts making 177 staff in all.

The new store includes Market Street, Morrisons' unique collection of individual fresh food shops.

Diamond Pet Foods to create 40 new jobs in Lexington

While some companies are laying people off, a Lexington County plant for Diamond Pet Foods plans to bring 40 new jobs to the area by the end of the year.

Diamond Pet Foods in Gaston announced plans to expand, and they are already hiring to fill open positions. It's part of a $1 million project they expect will help boost the economy.

The company's new warehouse is expected to be up and running by the end of the year. Crews are currently breaking ground for the nearly 60,000-square-foot facility.

"We're fortunate to be in an industry that's somewhat insulated. The economy, the way it is, there's a lot of good people out of work right now, and so, we count our blessings," Plant Manager Alan Osborn said.

"We try to target good people with excellent work histories who are flexible and will be here on time ,because people need to feed their families and pay their bills. And hopefully, we're in the position to create some of those opportunities for people," Osborn said.

Premier Processing creates 100 new jobs

Premier Processing, a start-up metal finishing company, is planning to open a facility at 3002 W. Pawnee St. this fall.

The company wants to create 100 jobs over the next five years and carry an average annual payroll of more than $3 million.

It is investing more than $3.8 million in the project.

“The quality work force makes Wichita the perfect location, and combined with the response of local and state economic development groups, helped make our decision,” Brad Hart of Premier Processing said, in a release.

“We are excited to welcome Premier Processing to Wichita,” said Kansas Department of Commerce Secretary David D. Kerr. “Given the nation’s current economic challenges, it says a lot about the Kansas business climate that a company like Premier would choose to locate here.”

The KDOC worked with Sedgwick County, the city of Wichita and the Greater Wichita Economic Development Coalition to secure incentives for the company.

State incentives include training funds, High Performance Incentive Programs and Enterprise Zone credits.

Other local incentives will be voted on by the City Council and Sedgwick County Commission in coming weeks.

Nordstrom creates 250 jobs

Department store chain Nordstrom Inc. on July 13 will begin accepting job applications for its Kenwood Towne Centre.

The Seattle-based retailer expects to hire 250 people. The location, at Kenwood and Montgomery roads, will open Sept. 25.

Positions are available in all store areas, including sales, support positions in alterations, housekeeping, the Cafe Bistro and the Ebar coffee bar.

The 138,000-square-foot store will be managed by Renata Bakale, an Australia native who started at Nordstrom Michigan Avenue (Chicago) in 2000. She comes to Cincinnati from Nordstrom at Fashion Mall at Keystone, in Indianapolis, where she is interim manager.

The store opening will be followed Nov. 20 with the arrival of the Nordstrom Rack outlet store, at Rookwood Pavilion in Norwood.

Toyota's new plastic factory brings new jobs to Indiana

A subsidiary of the world's largest automaker is bringing additional jobs to Central Indiana.

Wednesday, Toyota breaks ground on a new plastics factory in Johnson County.

The groundbreaking for the plastics plant will take place in the Franklin Business Park located near I-65. Access to the state's interstate system is one of the reasons why Franklin was chosen for the new factory.

The 64,000 square foot facility will house Premium Composite Technology North America and it will make plastics parts such as engine covers, brake light cases, and rearview mirrors for Japanese and American automakers.

The Toyota plant in Princeton, and Honda in Greensburg, will be big customers.

Toyota Tsusho Corporation, the 6th largest trading company in the world, will own 80 percent of the new plant.Operations will begin in the spring of 2010, bringing in 37 quality jobs.

"Number one, when you've got a time when the economy is in a downturn and you still land major national corporations to your community, you can not only get excited for the current situation, but for future growth," said Franklin Mayor, Fred Paris. "It may only be 35 jobs or 130 jobs, but if they like your community, they will tell their next supplier, hey, you ought to look at Franklin, we've got six other buildings there."

Franklin's unemployment is at 10%, so, landing new jobs with an international company is a big victory during the recession, and promising for future growth.

"I have had some people in my own community challenge why I would even go to Japan and the fact is, right now you have to continue to build those relationships. The one thing that we know from our friends in Japan, the Middle East and China is where we're working right now is that relationships are very important and these things don't happen overnight," Mayor Paris said.

The factory will be built next to the Best Buy Distribution Center, already located in the industrial park. Paris hopes to soon announce some exciting initiatives Best Buy is going to do in the community.

Mayor Paris says the park has been the backbone of the growth of the industrial sector of Franklin over the last 20 years. There are already plans for the city to start another hi-tech park.

Operations at the plastics plant will begin in the spring of 2010. The groundbreaking is at 1p.m. Wednesday with Lt. Governor Becky Skillman on hand.

AN award-winning Ribble Valley boutique hotel has been given the green light for a £15m. development.

Stanley House, at Mellor, already boasts 12 individual bedrooms, fine dining restaurant "Cassis" and some of the best conference and event facilities around.

Now it is set to almost double in size – and create 70 new jobs.

The ambitious expansion plans include an additional 40 individually designed bedrooms, an international quality spa complete with a hydro therapy pool with jacuzzi, salt, ice and steam experiences, sauna hot benches and an external hot tub and fire pit.

There are also to be eight personal treatment suites with razul, dry float facilities and relaxation rooms. In the fitness and leisure areas a comprehensively equipped gymnasium, aerobics and exercise rooms and an 18m swimming pool.

Stanley House will also add to the quality dining already on offer by adding a new 90-seat brasserie; a less formal dining area with commanding views towards the Ribble Estuary.

The older parts of Stanley House are Grade II listed. English Heritage has given its support to this development and has been closely involved in the designs of the new buildings and landscape of the 58-acre estate which opened in 2004 in the countryside close to Mellor.

The completed expansion will create 70 new jobs at Stanley House, as well as a raft of new contracts and jobs for the construction and craft industries locally.

Detailed plans and designs will be drawn up and finalised this year, with tenders invited during 2010 for a start to the build in 2011.

General manager Oliver Cooke said: "This is fantastic news! It will allow us to bring to the beautiful Ribble Valley something it so richly deserves. Stanley House simply oozes style, and all that individuality will have a huge influence as this project gets under way."

McDonald's creates 90 new jobs in Waikato

Up to 90 jobs are expected to be created by McDonald's in the Waikato with the opening of a new site in Otorohanga's main street and the refurbishment of its Tokoroa restaurant.

McDonald's opened in Otorohanga last Friday, creating 60 jobs in the town which already boasts a zero unemployment rate for under 25-year-olds.

A planned refurbishment of McDonald's in Tokoroa could create up to another 30 positions.

The Otorohanga franchise owner, Tony Rowland, said many of the new employees were mothers looking to return to work, beneficiaries, people looking for more secure employment and students seeking part-time work.

In a deal with the Social Development Ministry, McDonald's receives up to $16,000 a year every time it recruits a beneficiary under the partnership.

The deal is open to those employed full-time at the business, with potential for a long-term unemployed person to gain a $16,000 subsidy over 12 months more than $300 a week.

Mr Rowland said he approached Work and Income New Zealand before he opened the business, offering jobs.

"Otorohanga has a very low unemployment rate," he said. "We also advertised."

Mr Rowland said he got about 200 applications for the 60 positions.

A Work and Income spokeswoman said 12 beneficiaries had been employed at the Otorohanga restaurant but Work and Income was still determining how many qualified for the subsidy.

Renai Turner is one of theformer beneficiaries working at the restaurant.

The young mother said she hated being on a benefit and the connotations that came with it.

Unable to find full-time work in Te Kuiti, she had been on the domestic purposes benefit while working part-time shifts in Te Kuiti's Central Cafe.

When the jobs at the Otorohanga McDonald's were advertised she thought it was something she could do.

Ms Turner underwent six weeks of training before the restaurant opened and is working in the McCafe section of the business.

"I really like it, I enjoy it and have learnt a lot," she said.

"It's good to get off the benefit as well because I really didn't want to be on it."

Ms Turner said the job allowed her to fit her work around her two children, Paige, 6 and Kaylin, 5. "Tony has given me 30 hours a week.

"Now I can go off the DPB," she said.

The agreement between Work and Income and the fast-food chain is tipped to provide up to 7000 jobs to unemployed people over the next five years.

A McDonald's spokeswoman said the partnership with Work and Income was just one avenue of recruitment the company would use to fill an expected 6000 jobs over the next three years for 30 new outlets.

The first New Zealand McDonald's was established in 1976 in Porirua.

There are now 145 nationwide.

McDonald's plans to open another 30 sites nationwide by 2011.

Sunflower Farmers Markets opens new store at Albuquerque, 100 jobs created

The growing organic and natural foods supermarket chain, Sunflower Farmers Markets, is opening its third location in Albuquerque on July 29.

Company officials say the new site, at 6300 San Mateo Blvd. NE, will add 100 jobs to the local economy. The new store occupies the site where a former Wild Oats Market was housed.

“We are eager to expand our grocery store concept in Albuquerque, as this is where our success first started,” founder and CEO Mike Gilliland said.

The Duke City is where the very first store in the Sunflower chain was planted, at 10701 Corrales Rd. NW on Albuquerque’s Westside in 2002. The second market, at 5112 Lomas Blvd. NE opened in 2007.

Complimentary breakfast items will be offered at the grand opening, starting at 6:30 a.m., when Gilliland hosts a garland-cutting ceremony.

Doors will then open at 7 a.m. The first 200 customers will receive a free reusable shopping bag filled with groceries that are valued at more than $50. An in-store purchase is required.

The market, with its signature marketing slogan, “Serious Food at Silly Prices,” is planning a fourth Albuquerque location to open in 2010 on the northwest corner of Montgomery and Juan Tabo boulevards.

Two new markets are planned for Santa Fe as well — one this summer and one in 2010.

A total of 25 Sunflower Markets are operating in Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas and Utah. The company was founded in 2002.

Fruitapeel creates 50 jobs in UK

The former Sunjuice site in Llantrisant, Rhondda Cynon Taf, is to be taken over by UK fruit and confectionary firm Fruitapeel.

Sunjuice closed in January with the loss of over 120 jobs when parent firm Serious Food went into administration.

Fruitapeel has taken over some of the assets on the site and says it is keen to take on former Sunjuice employees.

The move is being financially supported by the Welsh assembly government, which backed Fruitapeel's bid for equipment and production lines at a recent auction.

Economic Minister Ieuan Wyn Jones said: "The assembly government has been working hard behind the scenes to support companies interested in buying these assets on condition they are retained in Wales.

"But as they are being sold by auction it meant we had to move swiftly to meet extremely tight deadlines to ensure the necessary support was in place.

"We welcome the news from Fruitapeel. It is exactly the outcome we hoped for and we are extremely pleased that this investment will create new jobs and provide employment opportunities for those people who lost their jobs when Sunjuice closed."

Fruitapeel, established three years ago, is now the second largest manufacturer of fruit and confectionery based sauces in the UK.

It produces sauces for companies including Del Monte, Tate and Lyle and Cadbury.

Lexington has landed nearly 100 new jobs as Scentsy – a company specializing in wickless candles sold by independent agents, often in "Tupperware Party" type settings – has announced plans to locate an 80,000 square foot distribution center at W.T. Young Storage at 2471 Palumbo Drive.

The 70 to 100 jobs come with a capital investment of $750,000 from the company.

"The recession has certainly affected our economy, but there are many indications that we are holding our own," Mayor Jim Newberry said stated in a release regarding the Scentsy announcement.

Scentsy, founded five years ago in Idaho focuses on candles that utilize a heating plate rather than a wick to dispense scents.

Scentsy President and CEO Orville Thompson said the Lexington location will help expand the young company's reach. "The strategic expansion of our distribution operations here allows us to increase our service levels and streamline delivery to our expanding customer base in the eastern U.S., Puerto Rico, and other international locations," he said in a release from Commerce Lexington.

New plant at Sellafield could create 5,000 jobs

A new plutonium manufacturing plant alongside the existing Mox at Sellafield could create 5,000 jobs and £1 billion of investment, Copeland MP Jamie Reed has told parliament.

The call which the MP first made in The Whitehaven News last February has been repeated in a House of Commons energy debate.

Mr Reed said Copeland and the country could not move forward without a Sellafield Mox Plant (SMP), and action needed to be taken either to safeguard or replace it to help Britain secure its own energy needs and stop reliance on other countries.

The performance of the existing Mox plant is officially “under review” 10 years after being built at a cost of nearly £500 million but the bill has now soared to around £2 billion due to delays in discharging contracts.

But despite SMP’s “significant processing problems”, Mr Reed said 5,000 new jobs could be created and more than £1bn of new investment secured if a new plant was built.

He told fellow MPs of interest from companies prepared to invest in a new facility and, whatever past problems there had been, using plutonium and uranium oxides to create fuel was “unquestionably the right policy”.

Copeland’s MP went on: “SMP hosts a unique array of skilled workers with incredible technical, scientific and engineering competence and these skills and abilities must not be lost to the Sellafield site or to the industry as a whole.

“Closing SMP without a replacement facility is not an option – it has underperformed but has a use until such time as a new Mox plant is built at Sellafield.

“There is no credible case for pursuing an alternative policy on environmental grounds, on economic grounds, on grounds of national energy security and on the grounds of effectively pursuing global non proliferation policies.”

He told climate change minister David Kidney that Britain can only play its part in speeding up nuclear disarmament and securing energy supply with Sellafield, Thorp and SMP or its successor. Plutonium must also be seen as an asset as branding it a “waste” could jeopardise geological repository which in itself would mean investment.

Mr Reed slammed Tory cut proposals for public spending as “entirely ignorant” given that Sellafield is largely funded by the tax-payer. He said any cuts would lead to larger bills in future with decommissioning delayed, on top of any environmental issues.

He added: “Nobody of integrity, knowledge or honesty could possibly hope to sell such a ridiculous proposal to my constituents and the Sellafield workforce.

“If the policy platform of using the Sellafield plutonium stockpile as a valuable commodity in a new facility is followed, the cost of operating Sellafield could be significantly reduced and the clean-up accelerated. ”

U.S. Steel recalls 800 workers

About 800 workers are back to work at the U.S. Steel Corp. mill in Granite City, Ill., which had been idled since December.

The steel industry has been battered by the drop in automobile sales and construction work.

About 1,600 workers lost their jobs when Pittsburgh-based U.S. Steel idled the Granite City mill in December.

Then the company idled its coke operations in February, laying off another 390 workers.

Granite City Mayor Ed Hagnauer had said he was optimistic the idling wouldn’t turn into a permanent closure because U.S. Steel continued its $600 million upgrades on the mill.

Granite City Works, the city's biggest employer, had more than 2,200 workers when it was fully operational.

Tony’s Fine Foods adds 75 jobs in Sacramento

A major food distributor announced that it will significantly expand its West Sacramento headquarters by building a new 77,000-square-foot building to house a freezer and distribution warehouse that will result in the addition of at least 75 full-time jobs.

Tony’s Fine Foods, which supplies meat, baked goods, cheese and specialty items to supermarkets, delis and other stores, plans to spend $15 million on the expansion and renovations of its existing warehouses and offices.

The new center will allow the company to serve the entire California market and expand its product supply. The 75-year-old, family-owned company operates from a 143,000-square-foot facility on 25 acres in the city. It has been expanding through customer growth and business acquisition.

Company officials are working with the city’s Economic Development Department to acquire permits for the new facility. The construction manager on the project is BTV Development.

In 2007, Tony’s installed a 1 megawatt solar voltaic system on the roof to supply power to its headquarters, becoming the owner of the largest privately held solar voltaic system in the city.

University of Phoenix Stadium looking to hire 500 part-time workers

The management at University of Phoenix Stadium has scheduled a job fair at the venue next week, looking to hire 500 part-time workers for the upcoming football season and other major events.

Global Spectrum, which manages the stadium, is teaming up with SAFE Management and food provider Centerplate. All three companies will be participating in the UOP Stadium Job Fair on July 14 from 3 to 8 p.m.

“These part-time positions are a great way to earn extra money in this tight economy,” said Scott Norton, director of marketing and public relations for Global Spectrum. “The workers hired have a chance to be involved with our upcoming event season, including Arizona Cardinals games, a U2 concert and WrestleMania.”

BMI adds 30 jobs to Nashville office

Music rights organization BMI plans to move about 25 to 30 jobs to Nashville from its New York offices.

The agency, which collects royalties on behalf of songwriters, composers and music publishers, is transferring administrative positions to its Music Row offices, according to reports. It's part of a long-term effort to shift much of BMI's work from Manhattan to Nashville.

BMI's Nashville office employs about 500 people, while the agency has about 140 employees in New York.

Indian IT services vendor Tech Mahindra is planning to hire approximately 2,000 employees at its BPO arm over the next three to four months.

Most of the jobs will be at its new Kolkata facility. It already has 4,000 employees at four other centers in Noida, Pune, Chandigarh, and Chennai.

SV Sriram, head of BPO operations at Tech Mahindra, said: "The BPO sector is recovering faster than the IT sector. The BPO arm contributes to around 5%-7% of Tech Mahindra's total revenues and we aim to reach 10% in the next 18 months."

Gilead Sciences creates 30 new jobs

US biotechnology company Gilead Sciences is to set up a new financial centre for its European businesses in Cork, creating 30 new jobs.

The new European Financial Shared Services Centre will process financial activities for Gilead's operations. Gilead currently employs 125 people at its facility in Carrigtwohill, Co Cork.

The company's main area of activity is developing treatments for infectious diseases such as HIV and hepatitis. It set up in Cork after buying the Cork manufacturing facilities of Nycomed in 2007.

'The decision to choose to locate in Cork was based on our track record of success here, the experience in the region, the availability of skills and the presence of several global international companies,' said Julie O'Neill, Gilead Sciences' general manager in Ireland.

Reynosa and Monterrey are getting 2,500 new maquiladora jobs after a Korean electronics company decided to expand operations south of the border.

LG Electronics investing more than $100 million dollars in its facilities in Mexico.

The company announced on Monday that it plans to close a television assembly plant in Mexicali in order to expand a similar plant in Reynosa.

The move will bring 1,200 television assembly jobs to the Tamaulipas border city.

The company also said they plan to expand operations at a refrigerator and electric oven plant in Monterrey bringing 1,300 jobs there.

The reorganizations are expected to take over the summer.

Verizon Wireless to hold career fairs at Duke City

New John Lewis store creates 700 jobs in London

John Lewis has announced the creation of 700 new jobs in London with the opening of a new department store near the Olympic Park in east London.

The store will be in Westfield Stratford City and is due to open in 2011. And John Lewis has signed a charter committing to provide at least 250 jobs to long-term unemployed local residents and sourcing the remainder of the 700 jobs locally, where possible.

Boris Johnson, mayor of London, said: "The success of Stratford City is critical to the success of London's 2012 legacy. Sitting at the heart of this brand new district in the capital, it will serve to link together the thriving communities that will be created in east London over the coming years."

Other stores in the planned development include Waitrose, and altogether the shopping centre is expected to provide 18,000 jobs for the local community.

Ubisoft to set up center in Toronto

Video game developer Ubisoft will set up shop in Toronto as part of a deal with the Ontario government to create jobs in the province.

Premier Dalton McGuinty and Ubisoft Montreal CEO Yannis Mallat are expected to release more details about how many jobs will be created when they make the announcement later today.

The company, which already has a studio in Montreal and employs more than 2,000 in Quebec, also set up a presence in Vancouver earlier this year.

It has created games such as Tom Clancy's "Rainbow Six" and "Prince of Persia."

Ontario has been trying to attract tech-based, creative industries as part of its plan to offset the loss of jobs in the manufacturing sector.

The province has a digital media industry that generates about $1 billion a year.

US-based food company Sara Lee is likely to add 40 jobs as part of its expansion plans in Rochelle, Illinois.

According to the news source, the company intends to expand its facility in Rochelle that distributes frozen and refrigerated products such as Sara Lee baked goods, Ball Park Franks, and Jimmy Dean sausages to the central and northwestern US.

Chicago-based software maker Incisent Technologies plans to open an Austin development facility.

The new office is scheduled to open at the end of the summer. It will house a senior-level engineering team developing software designed to solve customers’ business problems, company officials said.

Incisent was founded in 2001 by partners in the Chicago-based private equity firm Ryan Enterprises Group. It develops business intelligence and Internet marketing software, specializing in online product advertising and automotive retailing.

The Austin office will serve as a software development site for the company’s consumer optimization and business intelligence technologies, officials said.

'The smartest thing I did during my job search was that I made a full-time job out of finding a job. I stuck to a regular work schedule where I was up and on the computer from 8-5, and sometimes later due to time zones.

Additionally, I networked. I made sure to get the word out that I was job hunting. I think that you have to spare your pride when you are looking for a job during tough economic times. You must leave no rock unturned; tell everyone you know that you are job searching. You never know who is going to have that connection that sets you up with a position.

In my case, I had former colleagues and university professors, friends, family, former clients, etc., all on the lookout for me. Also, I made sure to put “Currently Job Seeking” on my LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook pages. I made the information available for anyone who saw me.'

Limavady Gear Company adds 10 jobs

Limavady businessman Richard Hogg is bucking the recessionary trend with plans to expand his company's operations locally and overseas.

While many firms are struggling in the financial downturn Limavady Gear Company - a heavy engineering and manufacturing firm - plans to add 10 staff to the 30-strong workforce and is moving to bigger premises. The company is also in the process of opening an associate office in Vancouver, Canada.

"We'd like to go international with the company, that's the idea," said managing director Richard Hogg.

Staff will leave their current Ballykelly site over the next few weeks and move to what was the former Seagate site on Dowland Road in Aghanloo.

"Seagate is a good modern building. There's plenty of room for expansion. The site has 180,000 square feet and we'll use about 50 or 60,000 square feet in the meantime for our ourselves," he said.

"That's one of the good things about having Dowland Road. It has an international feel to it anyway. It's a modern, new building and we want to try and 'green it' as much as we can."

Mr. Hogg also plans to create a Centre of Excellence for renewable energy at the site for entrepreneurs to develop ideas and is in talks with Invest NI and the University of Ulster.

"If someone has an idea, they can come here and carry it right through," he explained.

"I don't think that has been done before, where a centre is beside a full manufacturing plant. That should create a lot of buzz and employment out there," he said.

"That centre should create another 50 to 60 jobs at least. We are pushing to get that started before the end of the year."

Grand Designs

LGC had a massive boost last weekend when the company's Skyrota turbine helped power rock legends Bruce Springsteen and Tom Jones at the internationally famous Glastonbury festival.

The locally designed and built Skyrota turbine and generator system is designed to capture energy whichever way the wind blows. It means it doesn't lose energy when conditions vary.

"That's publicity money can't buy," said Mr. Hogg of the Glastonbury experience.

The Skyrota is also set to feature on the popular Channel Four programme 'Grand Designs' in the New Year after the featured homeowner bought one of the Skyrota turbines.

Collecto Inc adds 50 new jobs

A Norwell debt collection agency is expanding as it keeps up with the busy demands of its clients.

Collecto Inc., which does business as CCA, recently signed a lease for an additional 10,000 square feet at its 700 Longwater Drive building, bringing the total size of the office to more than 40,000 square feet.

John Burns, vice president of corporate services for CCA, said he expects that the furniture will arrive for the new space on Monday and that staffers will move into the expansion later this month. Burns said CCA signed the lease about a month ago.

The company has been adding numerous jobs lately in Norwell, with a growth spurt that’s bringing about 40 to 50 new jobs to the office over a six-month period, Burns said. He said the hiring for those jobs began about two months ago.

The company’s most recent headcount includes 680 employees nationwide, with 250 in Norwell, Burns said.

CCA, the U.S. subsidiary of Germany’s EOS, last announced a big expansion in late 2004 after it won a piece of a major contract with the U.S. Department of Education. At that time, CCA added about 7,800 square feet to the Norwell office.

CCA’s focus is debt collection, but it also specializes in medical billing and employs about 40 people in a medical billing service office in Brockton, Burns said.

One factor behind the latest growth in CCA’s business, Burns said, is that many companies with overdue customer balances are reducing the time that they hold those receivables before turning them over to an outside collection agency.

CCA also has grown recently through its purchase on Dec. 1 of the Rochester Credit Center, a debt collection company that had about 60 employees in Rochester, N.Y. CCA, which uses that office as its New York regional center, also has offices in Dallas, Denver and Tinley Park, Ill.

Fidelity Investments create hundreds of jobs at Rhode Island

Mutual fund giant Fidelity Investments of Boston plans to bring hundreds of new jobs to Rhode Island, Governor Carcieri said.

The move is part of an internal reshuffling of staff among Fidelity's various locations in Massachusetts, including Boston and Marlborough.

As part of that reshuffling, Fidelity plans to move several hundred jobs to its Smithfield campus.

In a statement, Carcieri said, "Fidelity has established itself as one of our most important corporate citizens. Today's announcement to bring 500 additional jobs to the state is welcome news, and builds on the growing financial services industry here in Rhode Island. Fidelity continues to make an investment in Rhode Island and its workforce, and I look forward to the positive impact of the company's expanded presence."

The move will boost employment in Rhode Island, which has an unemployment rate of 12.1 percent, the highest since at least 1976.

Airtricity creates 200 new jobs

Scottish-owned electricity supplier Airtricity has announced the creation of 200 new jobs as it embarks on a drive to win new customers.

The company, which supplies 70,000 customers in the Irish market, said it will create 50 new positions at its headquarters in Sandyford, Co Dublin, with the remaining 150 jobs being outsourced roles.

The new positions will be in sales, customer support, billing and support services.

Airtricity is launching a publicity campaign next week and is hoping to attract new customers with promises of electricity bills 13 per cent cheaper than ESB rates and the cheapest standalone rates in the country.

One of Ireland's best-known green companies, Airtricity was sold last February to Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) in a deal worth €1.8 billion.

The combined Airtricity/SSE group has developed 40 wind farms across Europe and North America resulting in over 1,500MW of electricity, making it a leading wind-farm developer.

Kevin Greenhorn, Managing Director, Airtricity Supply, commented: “This is great news on the jobs front, this announcement reinforces that there is real potential to generate jobs in the renewable energy sector and that the industry can help the country out of its current downturn."

O'Kane Plumbing and Electrics creates 70 jobs in Ireland

Northern Ireland firm O'Kane Plumbing and Electrics has announced plans for more than 70 new jobs in the Republic.

The Co Tyrone-based company said the jobs will be created in its renewable energy division over the next three years.

Forty jobs will be advertised this year — and a further 15 jobs will be created next year and the same number the following year for tradespeople, surveyors, administrative and managerial staff.

The jobs will be created when the company, based in Dunamore near Cookstown, expands its operation in Leinster.

It also plans to extend its apprenticeship programme for school leavers into the Republic.

Tanaiste and Minister for Trade, Enterprise and Employment, Mary Coughlan, who is a friend of managing director Maurice O'Kane's wife, formally announced the new jobs yesterday.

“This creation of jobs is a fantastic boost to the area of Leinster at this time,” she said at the launch in the Merrion Hotel in Dublin.

“It is a vital step forward to ensuring the demands for renewable energy sources are met as more people realise the value of money-saving initiatives provided in the country.”

She said business people had not been inclined to think about cross-border opportunities in the past.

“I recognise and welcome O'Kane's commitment to its Irish customers and its Dublin base. These new jobs will serve to strengthen this commitment further,” she said.

O'Kane Plumbing and Electrics currently employs 60 people and was established over 20 years ago.

Managing director Maurice O'Kane said the company placed a special emphasis on rising energy costs.

He said the company could assist householders who wanted to try new renewable energy products, like solar panels, to benefit from government grants.

He said a recent report showed that 160,000 homes in Dublin had a building energy rating that was one of the lowest a home could get.

CDC Enterprises will create 200 jobs in Omaha

During these tight times, Omaha's mayor has some positive news. Tuesday, Mayor Jim Suttle announced a Minnesota company plans to open a facility in North Omaha, creating jobs.

CDC Enterprises makes energy-efficient air ducts. The new facility will intially create 30 jobs, with the potential to grow up to 200 new positions.

"We're doing this because we know it's the right thing to do, at the right time, and we are extremely excited about this opportunity to grow and expand our business," said Jon Jungers of CDC Enterprises.

No word yet on when these jobs will be available. Planning is still in very preliminary stages.

Over 250 new jobs at Eisai's new HQ in England

Over 250 new jobs have been promised for the East of England following the £100 million launch of a new European strategic base for one of Japan’s leading pharmaceutical companies.

The pledge comes from Eisai, a research driven international pharmaceutical group that has just completed construction of a European Knowledge Centre (EKC) on a 14.5 acre site at the Hatfield Business Park.

Known for its manufacture of Aricept, the most widely prescribed treatment for Alzheimer’s disease, Eisai achieved net sales of around £4.9 billion in the last financial year with the backing of an 11,000 strong global workforce.

The Centre is one of the company’s biggest ever single capital investment projects and provides Eisai with its first manufacturing facility in Europe.

As well as a research laboratory, office building, and shared facilities. In all, 500 staff are expected to use the base, half of which will be newly created positions.

The company’s approach to Europe as a single market economy means the company can now consolidate all European service functions including marketing, medical, finance and IT, at the new European headquarters.

All its internal functions including discovery research, clinical development, production, marketing and HQ operations are also being integrated at the Centre.

A new discovery research function will also be added to extend and strengthen the capabilities of the company’s discovery research subsidiary, which is based at University College London.

Eisai’s research efforts are focused on three therapeutic areas: neurology, gastro-intestinal disorders and oncology/critical care. It specialises in developing treatments for conditions such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease and epilepsy.

Strategically, the Centre allows Eisai to lift its reliance on business alliance partner firms for product production, enabling the company to manufacture its own products in Europe for the first time.

Eisai will start packaging several of its products in-house during the end of the fiscal year 2009 and also plans to manufacture drug formulations in the future, making Hertfordshire the centre of the value chain in Europe.

Sales subsidiaries will however, take on sales-specific functions as the company makes the transition to a ‘High Efficiency Model’ in Europe.

Eisai now owns 15 group companies in Europe including regional headquarters and pharmaceutical sales subsidiaries, which currently cover 19 countries mainly in the EU.

President and CEO of Eisai Co, Ltd, Haruo Naito, said: “Eisai believe that integrating all company functions on a single site will both encourage the creation of knowledge and improvements in our quality, efficiency and productivity.

Aegis Communications hiring 300 for Sierra Vista call center

The Aegis Communications call center in Sierra Vista is looking to fill 300 new positions this month, nearly doubling its workforce.

The business process outsourcing provider is ramping up for an expected increase in calls for a “major health care client,” said Aparup Sengupta, global CEO and managing director for Aegis Limited, in a release.

“We are pleased to announce the expansion of our relationship with the client", Sengupta said.

The company will also hire more than 700 people in Irving, Texas, in anticipation of the increased call volume.

Locally, the surge of hires will include the dozens of employees laid off in May, said Center Director Mike Gonzales.

“They’re the first ones we’re calling,” Gonzales said. “We’ve already brought back a few, and we’ll be bringing back the rest of them, if they haven’t moved on.”

Training courses for the new positions will begin Aug. 10, he said.

Aegis, which employs about 400 people prior to the hiring surge, recently celebrated 10 years in Sierra Vista.

MCI annex brings 169 new jobs

The Department of Corrections has added an annex at Mayo Correctional Institute with a wastewater treatment plant upgrade. Plus, the department took down six small open bay dorms due to safety issues, including deterioration in the main unit, according to DOC spokeswoman Joe Ellen Radcliff. The dorms have been replaced with four newer prototype open bay dorms that require fewer staff members for oversight. The annex holds 1,335 and more than 60 beds were added in the main unit.

For 2009-10, the department received 169 new positions specifically for the Mayo annex. This unit will also receive non-specific dormitory positions (security and classification) as they open, said Radcliff.

The expansion, which will bring APAC’s total to 500 employees locally, is a result of the increasing needs of its main client, Verizon, said Michael Usborne, a recruiter for the company.The jobs will require previous customer service experience and start at $9.50 per hour, with the possiblity of up to $2 per hour in performance bonuses.

Utica Mayor David Roefaro said the move is part of a trend of adding jobs downtown, including 300 in the past six months. He said those jobs have come at Affiliated Computer Services Inc. on Bleecker Street, AAA call center on Court Street and APAC.

Daysoft adds 35 new jobs at Lanarkshire HQ

Disposable contact lens manufacturer Daysoft announced a £2.5 million investment in its Lanarkshire headquarters and hailed the addition of 35 employees.

The new jobs created include posts as production operators, production technicians, engineers and IT specialists – and bring the group's employee numbers up to 150.

Chairman and founder Ron Hamilton said the group has sold 200 million disposable contact lenses since its launch in 1999. Daysoft sells the products to 27 countries via independent opticians and online.

Hamilton, the inventor of the disposable contact lens, said: "The continued growth of our business has boosted our resources at a time when other manufacturers are struggling.

"We judged this a great time to invest in our building and increase our staff levels."

Three years ago, following changes in regulations, the company began selling direct to consumers online. Daysoft claims that every week 3,000 contact lens wearers switch to its product and that orders are growing by 10 per cent every month.

The investment has been used to increase production capacity and purchase the firm's 27,000sq ft building at Hamilton International Technology Park in Blantyre, which they have rented up until now.

Hamilton set up Daysoft in 1999 after he sold his original company, Award, to Bausch & Lomb for $33m in 1996, becoming a multi-millionaire in the process.

He said: "Our growing online sales mean that for more clicks we can invest in more bricks.

"We really feel we have the tiger by the tail and we'll be looking at other opportunities to grow the business in the near future."

Volvo's to recruit 60 people for fuel cell plant

Not only could fuel cell technology help to clean up the earth’s atmosphere, but it is providing a boost to the economy too.

The Volvo Group has teamed up with the Swedish Energy Agency and international corporations Midroc and OCAS to invest £15.7million into the development of fuel cells - a move that is expected to create around 100 new positions in the Gothenburg region over the next three years.

In an effort to accelerate the introduction of fuel cell cars to the market, the parties will make a joint investment of SEK 200million in Powercell Sweden AB. In the autumn the company will need to recruit around 60 people for an entirely new plant in the region.

The fuel cells will be charged with hydrogen gas, which is then converted into electricity, water and carbon dioxide (CO2) via a chemical reaction. Compared with normal diesel or petrol powered engines, fuel cells produce much less CO2 and no emissions at all of particulates and nitrogen oxides.

Powercell Sweden AB meanwhile, has two patented components - a fuel converter and a PEM fuel cell - this is the type of fuel cell used most frequently in transportapplications. The converter meanwhile produces hydrogen gas from biofuels including ethanol, biogas, biodiesel, methanol and DME.

Intermountain Electronics opens new plant in Mt.Vernon, hiring to start in Fall

Utah-based Intermountain Electronics will open a new plant in Mt. Vernon.

The company custom-makes electrical equipment for a range of industries with a focus on the mining industry. That's just one of the reasons they decided to move to Southern Illinois.

President and CEO John Houston and several members of his team were welcomed warmly Thursday by the Jefferson County Development Corporation and other members of the community.

"Today marks a very special day in economic development in the city of Mt. Vernon," said Mayor Mary Jane Chesley.

Intermountain Electronics will build a facility in the city's industrial park. It will be equipped with state of the art cutting, bending, fabrication, assembly and testing equipment for electrical switchgear and associated apparatus.

The company will hire approximately twenty people to fill various positions.

Houston says Southern Illinois' coal-mining industry makes it an ideal location for the company.

"I think the forecast for the Illinois basing mining industry is bright" and that could translate to expansion.

"Our facility in Utah has 70 manufacturers, or 70 people working on the plant floor. So, let's hope," Houston said.

He also touted the economic development team that drew the company to town.

Intermountain Electronics is the first new business that Jefferson County Development Corporation has welcomed to the area.

"I saw that the crowd [gathered for the announcement] was the team and that's what made this project a reality. If we hadn't worked as a team I don't know if this would happen or not," Chesley said.

That team highlighted workers in the region that are more-than-ready to get on the job.

"The labor pool that we see here is something that we see as a huge advantage for success and sustainability," Houston said.

Construction is expected to begin in August and officials say the facility should be up and running early 2010. They expect to begin hiring in the Fall.

Heffernan Insurance Brokers has hired 17 employees to form a division specializing in professional liability for architects, engineers and lawyers. Sixteen of the new staffers came from Willis/HRH offices in Redwood City and Irvine, according to the Walnut Creek-based insurance brokerage, while John Feeney came from Costello & Sons in San Rafael.

The new unit, Heffernan Professional Practices Insurance Brokers, is based in Heffernan’s Palo Alto and Orange offices. With the new hires, announced Wednesday, Heffernan has 405 staffers overall, including 46 in Palo Alto and 19 in Orange, said spokeswoman Ann Mohler Basco.

Roper Industries Inc. is expanding in Commerce, creating 60 jobs, and a Chinese appliance and electronics giant is adding to its Gwinnett operations and will be creating 35-40 new positions.

Lanier Technical Collge in Oakwood will train the new Roper employees in an agreement involving Georgia Quick Start.

Announcement of the Gwinnett project came during a business recruitment trip to China by a Gwinnett County chamber of commerce delegation.

Hisense Corporation USA - a division of China's largest manufacturer and distributor of flat-panel screens, Hisense Company Ltd. - is expanding its North American headquarters operation in Gwinnett. The expansion will produce $800,000 in capital investment for Gwinnett and Georgia and create 35-40 new high-wage jobs (average salary of $55,000+ per year) for research & development and its call center over the next 3-5 years.

Hansen Technologies, a manufacturer of components for industrial refrigeration systems, is relocating its production facility to Commerce. About 60 positions are being created, and Monday, the company formalized an agreement with Georgia Quick Start and Lanier Technical College to provide state-of-the-art training for the new employees.

Illinois-based Hansen Technologies, a subsidiary of Roper Industries, is bringing its manufacturing into the Commerce facility currently occupied by Roper Pump, another Roper Industries subsidiary. Family Respiratory and Medical Supply Corporation to create 20 new jobs

A regional medical supply company has begun construction on a new facility in Camden that could bring up to 20 jobs to the area.

Family Respiratory and Medical Supply Corporation, which delivers oxygen and other medical supplies to patients' homes, already has locations in Smyrna and Milford. The 12,000-square-foot complex is slated for completion in November.

President Kenneth Suter said the new buildings will allow the company to expand its services and give employees more space for training. The site will feature office space, a warehouse, an area to repair equipment and a bulk oxygen tank for filling trucks.

The company has outgrown its other locations in Delaware, both of which are less than 3,000 square feet, Suter said.

With the baby boomers aging, the demand for the company's services will rise, he said, adding that Delaware's elderly population is expected to grow faster than the national rate.

"Home health care is needed more than ever now," Suter said.

The company will hire an additional 10 to 20 employees over the next two years, he said. It currently has 14 employees in Delaware.

Gov. Jack Markell and Economic Development Secretary Alan Levin attended a groundbreaking last week, saying small business development is one key to the state's economic recovery.

"The only way for Delaware's economy to prosper is for businesses such as this to step out and utilize the opportunities our state has to offer," Markell said.

Based in Baltimore, the company services all of Delaware, southern Pennsylvania and most of Maryland. It is opening a facility in Glen Burnie, Md. next week.

Mulhuddart-based Rottapharm already employs 115 people here in the manufacture of capsule, sachet and tablet forms of the company's glucosamine-based products used to treat inflammation and rheumatism.

The IDA-supported company, which set in Ireland in 1999, plans to extend the range of its manufacturing here as part of the expansion.

Rottapharm is part of the Rottapharm/Madaus group which is based in Italy and employs 2,200 people worldwide with €580 million in revenues last year.

Major jobs and revenue growth are being predicted at a Stevenage clinical research organisation (CRO) following a hugely successful first year under the control of North Carolina-based PharmaLinkFHI.

Staff and revenue figures have doubled at Matrix Clinical across its entire European operation since its June 2008 acquisition, taking the employee count to around 140, half of these at the Matrix headquarters in Hertfordshire.

The entire group is now rebranding under the name Novella Clinical as it prepares to push out to India and Latin America, cementing the East of England’s position as a stepping stone to Europe and the rest of the world for US businesses.

It is the success of Matrix that has made the name change necessary and Nigel Trim, Novella’s managing director for Europe, believes further growth of between 30 and 40 per cent is highly likely in Europe given the contract pipeline.

“This is all organic growth as we’re winning phase III clinical trial contracts,” said Trim. “We would not have grown anywhere near as much without PharmaLink as all the new deals are with US firms, companies that want to work in Europe.”

Novella’s US headquarters are based at the famous Research Triangle Park. It also has a major Moscow operation and is running the contracts won there through 18 different EU countries.

"It has a flying weight of less than 254 pounds, carries one passenger, we're going to start producing them here in Wichita, KS and we think people are really going to love them," says creator James Wiebe.

The Belite is a brand-new plane with the potential of bringing 25 new jobs to the area. A small number next to the 10,000 jobs local aviation companies have cut in recent months, but law makers say it's a start.

Congressman Todd Tiahrt tells Eyewitness News, "This is a small step in the right direction but it emphasizes what we need to do nationwide. That's growing the economy from the ground up."

Rep. Tiahrt was on hand for the unveiling. He says projects like this one are the real way to stimulate the economy and get Wichita back to where it was last fall. And it's the government's job to help make that happen.

Rep. Tiahrt adds, "Provide opportunities so that people can get back to work, so we can get companies strong again which will get people to buy business jets and that will get folks back to work here in Wichita, KS."

And a few people could be back to work as soon as the Belite gathers a little interest. Wiebe adds, "What we've got here is the kind of jobs that the community has to offer. I mean we use technologically skilled aviation people to do what we're doing."

Tesco has opened a new store in Chester nearly a week ahead of schedule, bringing with it more than 200 jobs.

Lord Mayor of Chester, Cllr John Ebo, took time out to visit the new 58,000 sq ft Tesco Homeplus, in Sealand Road, and to meet and greet staff.

The Homeplus store, an off-shoot of the chain which sells non-food products such as clothes and home appliances, opened up on Monday - three days ahead of its official launch date.

It is the third Tesco store in the city, bringing the total number of Tesco employees to more than 600.

Cllr Ebo said: "The new Tesco Homeplus store has brought new jobs to the local area at a time when it is most needed, and it is very interesting to learn the way retailers modernise to meet the needs of their customers."

Store manager James Piercy, said: "It was an honour to host the Lord Mayor and his fellow councillors.

"We still have a few finishing touches to complete but we are eagerly looking forward to our official opening celebrations on Thursday morning."

After a successful launch just over a month ago, NASA broke ground on a new flight facility at Wallops Island.

The new flight facility, the Taurus II, will launch science missions and deliver cargo to the international station in space. Also, the new facility will bring hundreds of jobs to the Eastern Shore.

Some local businesses have high hopes for the Taurus II.

Business owner, Tom Myers said, "We're really very enthusiastic about it. I think it will provide potentially a significant financial stimulus."

Another business owner, Michael Weldon said, "When people move here to work they need all the basics so they will go to restaurants, they'll go to the gas stations, they'll go to the shops to buy things ."

At one construction store, Manager Jason Young said it's needed.

"Well, we could all use the extra flow of people, jobs and businesses."

A project spokesperson said virtually all the new jobs can and may be local people. Some of the new employees will be on-going employees, while others will move to become part of the team.

Work on the project is expected to start from six to eight weeks from Monday's groundbreaking. The first launch from the new facility is scheduled for the Spring of 2011. The Taurus II is expected to bring $250 million in economic development to the Eastern Shore.

The park's parent company Merlin Entertainment has claimed that ongoing development of the park will help to create hundreds of new jobs and opportunities for employment.

Merlin's divisional manager Ian Crabbe said: "We are one of the biggest employers in the private sector; we employ about 2,500 people.

"Over the next ten years we hope that sustained growth will provide job security for an extra 735 staff, as we add to the park."

Meanwhile, an Asda store in Stoke Park has announced that it is to take on 200 new staff ahead of its opening in August.

Store people manager Nick Johnson told the Stoke Park Evening News that there has been a great response from the local community so far, with more than 100 applications already submitted.

Up to 300 new jobs could be created in Kirkby if plans to build a new Tesco store in the town are given the go ahead.

The store, which will be located on Lowmoor Road, close to the current Esso/Tesco petrol station, will measure more than 42,000sq ft and Tesco bosses are hoping to submit the planning application by the end of the month.

And they will unveil their plans during a special public consultation event at the Festival Hall tomorrow and Friday, when people will be able to give their views and this will form part of the application.

Tesco's corporate affairs manager Eoin Dardis said: "We are very excited about this project which we think will be crucial in the regeneration of Kirkby town centre.

"We want people to come along and have their say because people always have good ideas. We want to ensure that everyone benefits from this, such our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint at new stores."

Meanwhile, the proposals have divided existing traders in Kirkby.

'Flow'

Businessman Simon Wright, who has been campaigning to see more investment in the town, said he was backing the proposal.

"I would like to see Tesco work with businesses so that small, independent firms in the town centre can benefit," he said.

"For it to work, Lowmoor Road needs to be opened up to traffic so there is a better flow of traffic.

"There is still no investment in the town centre, but if Tesco brings people to the town centre then that is a good thing."

But Trish Curran, who works at the Fruit Bowl, on Station Street, said she was concerned that a Tesco store would drive business out of the town centre.

"The new Tesco might benefit other businesses in Kirkby such as jewellery shops or estate agents but we are in competition with them," she said.

"They can sell flowers as a loss leader to get people through the door and we cannot compete with them because they buy on such a huge scale.

Loyalty is a thing of the past now — people just want the cheapest thing they can get and it will destroy us."

British Gas is to create 2,600 new jobs by 2012 to lead the roll-out of smart meter technology.

Smart meters allow suppliers to record customers' gas and electricity use at a distance and let consumers see how much energy they are using.

The government has previously said that it wants all homes in Britain to be fitted with smart meters by 2020.

British Gas said 1,700 jobs would be new, while 900 would be people coming from other metering organisations.

Smart meters would remove the need to have people going round homes checking meters. It would also mean an end to estimated bills, which would reduce the need for call centre staff to deal with complaints about them.

British Gas said it would have 2,100 smart energy experts in the field who would install the new meters, as well as advising consumers how to make the best use of them.

The rest of the jobs created will be 400 support staff and 130 managerial positions.

Corrections Corporation of America will create more than 300 jobs in Georgia

Detention facilities operator Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) will bring more than 300 new jobs to Georgia with a $65 million expansion at two of its existing facilities and the opening of the new North Georgia Detention Center in Gainesville.

CCA said Wednesday it will add 788 beds at its Coffee Correctional Facility in Nicholls, Ga., and 712 beds at its Wheeler Correctional Facility in Alamo, Ga. by the third quarter 2010. The expansions also will also add 75 new jobs at each correctional facility.

When the expansions are done, CCA’s work force in Georgia will increase to more than 1,500.

Georgia, like many states facing an economy-driven budget crunch, wants privately owned and operated detention centers to help handle its growing number of prisoners. Private prisons, proponents say, save the government money because their facilities are built with private capital instead of tax dollars and private detention centers are 10 percent to 15 percent cheaper to operate.

Baldor Electric expects to create 32 jobs in three years

Baldor Electric Co. will receive $64,000 in One North Carolina Fund incentives as part of a plan to expand its Weaverville operations, Gov. Beverly Perdue’s office announced.

The company expects to invest more than $4.8 million in the Buncombe County expansion, which is designed to create 32 jobs over the next three years.

Arkansas-based Baldor makes industrial electric motors, mechanical power transmission products and drives and generators. It operates 26 manufacturing facilities around the world. Three of the company’s plants are in North Carolina - in Weaverville, Kings Mountain and Marion - employing a combined workforce of nearly 700 people.

The governor’s office said in a statement that Baldor is consolidating its Sleevoil hydrodynamic bearing line in Indiana and moving those operations to the Weaverville plant, which currently employs 128 people. The 32 new jobs added over the next three years will pay an average wage of $42,209.

These aren’t the first incentives to be awarded to Baldor. The company landed $157,000 in state incentives on June 23 as part of a consolidation that will create 114 jobs at its Kings Mountain facility. The company also won $75,000 in state incentives in May as part of a plan to expand its Marion operations.

The Georgia Department of Community Health (DCH) has about 1,300 new employees as of July 1, the start of the state’s fiscal year.

Public Health and Emergency Preparedness & Response -- formerly housed within the Georgia Department of Human Resources -- are now two new but independent divisions within DCH. The move is due to a new state law that mandates the Department of Human Resources transfer all matters relating to public health to DCH.

Emergency Preparedness & Response will manage emergency response, trauma systems, EMS systems and injury prevention programs. Public Health will oversee epidemiology and state labs, health promotion and disease prevention, infectious disease and immunizations, environmental health, family health and vital records.

Dr. J. Patrick O’Neal will be division chief for the new Emergency Preparedness & Response division.

Gov. Sonny Perdue will appoint a public health director. In the interim, DCH Commissioner Dr. Rhonda Medows will also serve as Georgia’s public health director.

The store, located at O’Fallon Point Shopping Center and originally opened in 1998, was expanded by more than 81,000 square feet, including a full line of groceries such as fresh produce and meat, a deli and a bakery.

The store, led by manager Brad Lathrop, continued to operate throughout its renovation but will celebrate its grand re-opening Wednesday.

Arizona looking for ways to use green collar job grants

Arizona is looking at applications to tap into the $500 million in grants available from the federal economic stimulus, this time with an aim of turning its work force green.

The state would have to get in line with others for the competitive grants, but it is something the Arizona Department of Commerce is considering, said spokesman David Drennon.

“Arizona Department of Commerce staff is reviewing the opportunities, and will be weighing the best options to bring the most impact to grow green-collar jobs for Arizonans,” he said in an e-mail.

The grants would be doled out by the U.S. Department of Labor and would funnel through five national and state programs: the Energy Training Partnership grants, Pathways out of Poverty grants, State Energy Sector Partnership and Training grants, Green Capacity Building grants, and State Labor Market Information Improvement grants.

The program will allow states to collect and analyze market information and direct people to green careers.

Department of Labor of officials are hoping grant applications line up with federal programs to maximize the potential for creating green jobs.

Georgia posts growth in online job ads

Georgia is among a handful of states showing modest gains in the number of online advertised vacancies. But overall, online labor demand was down by 66,700 nationwide, according to The Conference Board Help-Wanted Data series released on Monday.

Georgia, which reported a 9.7 percent unemployment rate in May, experienced a gain of 2,900.

Since January, online labor demand has fallen 71,000, but that’s a significant improvement over the 1.2 million decline in the previous five months between August 2008 and January 2009.

"We are not out of the woods yet, but job demand has definitely stabilized since January," Gad Levanon, senior economist at The Conference Board, said in a news release.

The number of advertised vacancies fell in June in all four regions of the country ranging from a modest drop of 3,400 in the Southern region to 18,100 in the Northeast, 13,400 in the Midwest and 10,300 in the West.

Nationally, computer and mathematical science saw the greatest decline in demand, down 19,900, followed by sales (-11,700), health practitioners and technical occupations (-10,400) and architecture and engineering (-10,000).

Some areas that saw growth were in art, design, entertainment, sports and media, which posted 98,200 advertised vacancies in June.

Affiliated Computer Services plans to hire 600 in Colorado Springs

Affiliated Computer Services Inc., a business process outsourcing firm, said that it will hire 600 employees in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Dallas-based ACS said it will invest $3 million in Colorado to provide the new workers with a 400-seat customer care center in Colorado Springs. The center will need to be staffed with managers, supervisors, agents and trainers, ACS said in a statement.

Chris Gilligan, a spokesman for ACS, said Monday the company picked Colorado Springs as the location for its customer care center because a client who will be relying on the center specifically asked for the center to be located in the mountain or pacific time zone. Gilligan said that request ruled out many areas, including Dallas.

ACS currently has 474 employees in Colorado and 34,000 agents working in 142 customer service centers internationally.

The company earlier this year said it would be hiring more than 200 people in the Seattle area, Maine, Washington and Indiana.

In just the past two months, ACS announced the creation of 1,300 new jobs, Gilligan said.

New Walmart store adds 300 jobs in Texas

A Walmart Supercenter opening in the Rio Grande Valley town of Penitas is further proof that Texas continues to have a strong economic climate, according to Gov. Rick Perry.

Perry was onhand for the opening of the supercenter which will bring 300 new jobs to the South Texas city with a population of 3,500.

“Employers are looking at Texas and realizing that we’ve not only kept a lid on the problems that are troubling other states, but also worked to foster an environment that encourages people to pursue their dreams, build businesses and create jobs,” Perry says.

The Penitas Supercenter will generate an estimated $300,000 to $400,000 in sales tax revenue, with one-half percent going to support the Penitas Crime Control and Prevention District, which funds law enforcement training, crime prevention programs and new equipment.

“There is no question that this area is on a growth trajectory, thanks to its dynamic workforce, proximity to our largest international trading partner, and the unbeatable work ethic here in the Valley,” Perry says.

Oregon had 51,402 'green jobs' in 2008

Three percent of the jobs in Oregon in 2008 were considered “green jobs,” according to the new Oregon Employment Department report "The Greening of Oregon’s Workforce: Jobs, Wages, and Training."

The report, based on a survey of employers, found that 51,402 green jobs accounted for Oregon’s private, state government, and local government employment. Green jobs were reported in all broad industry groups and were spread across 226 occupations.

According to the survey, a green job meets one of the following criteria:

• Increases energy efficiency.

• Produces renewable energy.

• Prevents, reduces or mitigates environmental degradation.

• Cleans up and restores the natural environment.

• Provides education, consulting, policy promotion, accreditation, trading and offsets, or similar services supporting the other categories.

The three industries with the most green jobs were construction, wholesale and retail trade, and administrative and waste services. Combined, these industries accounted for 47 percent of Oregon’s green jobs.

The five occupations with the most green jobs were carpenters, farmworkers, truck drivers, hazardous materials removal workers, and landscaping and groundskeeping workers. Together these workers represented 27 percent of Oregon’s green jobs.

The average wage for green jobs in 2008 was $22.61 per hour. On average, green jobs tended toward slightly higher wages than jobs across the entire economy. Occupations with higher minimum education requirements generally paid higher wages than occupations with little or no required education.

Employers project the number of green jobs will grow 14 percent between 2008 and 2010. Most growth will likely be in the farming, fishing, and forestry occupations, transportation and material moving occupations, and production occupations.

Huge vacancies in Missouri's health care

Missouri’s health care and social assistance industries have the highest number of vacancies, a new state report shows.

Three of the top 10 statewide occupations have the highest number of vacancies: registered nurses (4,560); nursing aides, orderlies and attendants (1,448); and child care workers (1,202), according to Missouri Job Vacancy Survey 2008 from the state Department of Economic Development.

The industry with the second most vacancies was the accommodation and food services industry, which contains two of the top three occupations: combined food preparation (4,584) and serving and waiters/waitresses (4,160).

Tax preparer H&R Block Inc. is readying to hire 15,000 tax professionals nationwide to prepare for next year's tax season.

Interested candidates have to complete H&R Block’s (NYSE: HRB) 69-hour income tax course. The courses are open for enrollment to English-speaking or bilingual candidates.

“In a tight job market, this course is a good opportunity to learn fresh skills that could lead to a new career,” said Michael Smith, H&R Block District Manager in Memphis.

FirstGroup America hiring 100 in Cincinnati

FirstGroup America said that it is hiring 100 new employees for its downtown headquarters in Cincinnati, mostly in the information technology area.

The transportation company scheduled a job fair for June 29, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at its 600 Vine St. offices, to take applications for 60 new IT positions. It’s looking for IT project managers, business analysts, database administrators and quality control professionals.

“These high-quality jobs are a reflection of the growth and investment FirstGroup America continues to make in our hometown,” said Frank Steele, director of recruiting, in a news release.

A May report said FirstGroup planned to move jobs to Cincinnati from its Greyhound headquarters in Dallas.FirstGroup bought Laidlaw International, the holding company for Greyhound, in 2007 for $3.4 billion. As a result of the acquisition, it expanded its employment in Cincinnati and last May, it moved its headquarters to larger space in the 600 Vine building.

FirstGroup is the U.S. subsidiary of FirstGroup plc, headquartered in Aberdeen, Scotland, which is the largest bus and rail operator in the United Kingdom.
